After strong winds and sub-zero temperature forced Conrad Anker and David Lama to turn back just 300-meters from the summit in 2015, the pair returned for a second attempt on Lunag Ri (22,660 feet), one of the Himalayas’ last unclimbed peaks. This time they weren’t stopped by weather. A blockage in Anker’s left anterior descending aorta stopped cut the attempt short, aka a heart attack. After rappelling the route and being evacuated by helicopter, Anker was treated at a hospital in Kathmandu. He is recovering well.
