News Link: Basque brothers Eneko and Iker Pou have completed a one-day redpoint of their 13-pitch route Orbayu (8c+/9a) on the limestone Naranjo de Bulnes formation in northern Spain. The 500-meter route combines new pitches with parts of two existing routes, including newly freed pitches on the 1980 route Mediterrano. The brothers worked on the route for two months this summer before making an eight-hour team-free ascent.
Orbayu has five pitches of 8a (5.13b) or harder, including the crux fifth pitch, for which a grade of 5.14c/d has been suggested. Using natural protection and old fixed gear wherever possible, the two men braved substantial run-outs and took some big whippers before the redpoint, as can be seen in the video below.
