8/04/03 – American Chad Kellogg won the annual Khan Tengri speed-climbing competition in Kazkhstan on August 1. The former Mt. Rainier climbing ranger raced from basecamp at around 13,100 feet to the 22,300-foot point on Khan Tengri (the race high point this year, about 700 feet below the summit), and then back to basecamp in 5 hours, 11 minutes, 46 seconds, according to www.mounteverest.net. On June 17, Kellogg set a new mark for climbing Denali’s West Buttress from basecamp. Successively wearing skis, running spikes and mountain boots with crampons, he climbed from basecamp at 7,200 feet to the 20,320-foot summit in 14 hours and 22 minutes. His round-trip time on Denali was 23 hours 55 minutes.
