Field Tested: Mammut Neon Rope Bag

The bag is eloquently uncomplicated

Mammut’s new Neon Rope Bag—which somewhat disappointingly comes only in dark red or black—is reminiscent of classic favorites. Built by a company that has been outfitting climbers since 1862, the bag is eloquently uncomplicated, consisting of a tarp, a pouch, a drawstring, a buckle, and two backpack straps. It’s large enough for an 80 meter, plus a few pieces of gear, but without an ounce of padding on the straps, you wouldn’t want to tote it far. Still, I like the ease of it. There’s no requisite smooshing to get the rope to fit. Plus the fabric is water-repellent, so everything stays dry. After using the bag for the past few months in quite possibly the rainiest Colorado season I’ve yet to endure, I can attest to that last point. Overall, the bag does its job and nothing further. At $50, it’s a good choice.
