Colombia’s Chicamocha Canyon is an idyllic place. It’s one of the largest canyons in the world—108 thousand hectares—and the plummeting orange walls are lined with bullet-hard sandstone.
According to Mountain Project, La Mojarra climbing sector extends for roughly a mile through the heart of the canyon. It’s here that our stunning Weekend Whipper takes place, on the classic 5.11+ sport route Chocarrero.
Chocarrero climbs steadily up a steep face before a roof encounter with tricky feet. Luis David Rueda had committed to the mantle but couldn’t quite get his beta sorted out and he peels off into space.
Rueda snagged his foot behind the rope on his earthbound descent, inverting him into space. Thankfully he was wearing a helmet—no harm no foul—and his belayer gave him an attentive, soft catch to boot.
Happy Friday, and be safe out there this weekend. Thanks to Escalada Colombia for the video.
